Author Guidelines

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

^{(updated in June 2020)}

The Quaestum Journal, e-ISSN: 2675-441X, is Pecege's scientific dissemination vehicle which continuous flow publishes scientific articles, scientific notes and bibliographic reviews (mainly at the invitation of the Editorial Board) in the field of Applied Social Sciences, every four months.

The original manuscripts submitted to review are initially evaluated by the Quaestum Editorial Team. Quality requirements for publication will be analyzed, such as article scope, adequacy in relation to journal standards, writing quality and theoretical basis. In addition, an update of literature review, consistency, and precision of the methodology, the contribution of results, discussion of data observed in the study, table and figure, originality and consistency of conclusions will also be considered.

Authors must comply with all guidelines. In case of noncompliance with any requirement, the article will be rejected.

The manuscript can be written in English, Portuguese and Spanish following the standards for scientific writing. Furthermore, the article may not have been submitted or published in another journal, as described in the cover letter signed by the corresponding author. It is recommended that the text be reviewed by a professional fluent in the language and familiar with the terminology and scientific texts.

Manuscript Submission

For submission of manuscript, all authors must be registered in the ORCID platform (link).

The corresponding author must send the signed cover letter, cover page, and the manuscript, via the journal's platform.

Cover Letter

Declaratory letter in which all authors agree to submit the article to Quaestum, granting an exclusive license for its publication. The content of the letter must grant that the article is original, not previously published and not being considered for publication elsewhere, in its final form, in both printed and electronic vehicles. The letter must be signed by the corresponding author and sent as a supplementary document, in ".pdf" file extension, in the option "transfer additional document" on the journal’s platform.

Cover Page

Identification of the article and its authors. The content must present the running title, manuscript category, title, the full name of the author(s) and full affiliations. It must be sent as an additional document, in an extension file ".doc, .docx or .rtf", on the journal’s platform.

Guidelines for the preparation of a Cover Page:

Running title: should be had to a maximum 5 words.

Title: should be written in bold, centered and in lower case letters, except for the first letter of the title, personal and/or scientific names.

Authors should mention the category to which the article fits in: Article, Review Article or Note y Comments. Subsequently, indicate the area: Agribusiness, Economics, Finance, Management, Marketing, Environment, Business, Rural, and Human Resources.

The corresponding author must be identified by an asterisk, indicating an institutional electronic address, just below the name.

The affiliation/address of the authors must include ORCID identification, name of institution, department, degree and full address.

The corresponding author must take full responsibility for the manuscript, including compliance with the journal's policies and will be the priority contact with the journal.

MANUSCRIPT DEVELOPMENT

The text must be written in the formal-impersonal language, and it must not include the direct quotation. Text and illustrations may be written in  English, Portuguese and Spanish language, according to the prevailing spelling and grammatical rules of each language.

Manuscripts must be submitted in MS Word or compatible software and attached on the platform in the "main document" option. Automated word processing features should not be used. The text must be formatted in Arial 11, A4 paper, 2.5 cm margins, and 1.5 spacing. The pages must be numbered sequentially, including illustrations and tables.

The document must be organized whenever possible, considering the following order:

Article: Title (maximum of 15 words), Title, Summary (maximum 250 words) Keywords (minimum of three and maximum of five words), Abstract, Keywords, Introduction (maximum of 45 lines), Material and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusion or Final Considerations (optional), Acknowledgments (optional), Authors' contributions (maximum of 5 lines) and References.

Note and Comments: Title (maximum of 15 words), Title, Summary (maximum of 250 words) Keywords (minimum of three and maximum of five words), Abstract, Keywords, Introduction (maximum 45 lines), Material and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusion or Final Considerations (optional), Acknowledgments (optional), Authors' contributions (maximum of 5 lines) and References.

Review Article: Title (maximum of 15 words), Title, Summary (maximum of 250 words) Keywords (minimum of three and maximum of five words), Abstract, Keywords, Introduction (maximum of 45 lines), Acknowledgments (optional), Conclusion and Final Considerations (optional), Contribution of authors (maximum of 5 lines) and References.

Regarding the sections:

Title: It must be presented in the same language. When the manuscript is written in Portuguese or Spanish, the title translated into English should be inserted just below the title (in the original language); if English is the language of the manuscript, the title translated into Portuguese should be inserted just below it. In any case, the title must contain a maximum of 15 words. Do not use: "Study of…, Influence of ... Development of..."

Resumo/Abstract: must be presented in the language of the text, accompanied by its translation into English (abstract); if English is the language of the manuscript, the abstract in Portuguese should be inserted just below the abstract and should not exceed 250 words, being structured in a single paragraph. The abstract should contain an introductory sentence on the subject, the purpose of the work, material and methods, main results and conclusions.

Palavras-chave/Keywords: the resumo/abstract/resumen must be accompanied by a minimum of three and a maximum of five words in the text language, excluding those in the title, sorted alphabetically, separated by a semicolon, and ended with a period punctuation.

Introduction: It must be based on recent bibliography and written with a maximum of 45 lines, addressing the importance of the subject, the justification and the purpose of the work, maintaining the use of quotations in a minimum level.

Material and Methods: the detailed description of the methodological procedures and choices adopted in the survey must be presented. Names of properties, institutions, companies, people or trade names involved in the study should not be mentioned. Locations must be identified only by geographic coordinates or city, state and country name. The methodology should be presented in the chronological sequence in which the work was conducted.

Mathematical expressions should be spelled using Microsoft Word® Equation Built, with the same font and text size. They should start in a separate line, aligned with the paragraph of the text and should be numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals placed in parentheses and aligned with the right margin of the text, as in the following example:

  where, FCt: is the cash flow in period t; K: is project discount rate; I0: is the initial investment at time zero; and, It: is the investment value predicted in each period.

Statistical analyses or application solutions (software) should not be mentioned in the references. These tools should be mentioned in Material and Methods in the following way: the specific analysis and the name of the software, its version and/or the year of release. For example, "...the statistical analysis was performed using the SAS PROC NLIN (Statistical Analysis System, version 9.2)". There is no need to mention application solutions.

Results and Discussion: authors should present the results of the work in a detailed way and the arguments based on correlated papers in the specialized literature.

Tables: the tables should be quoted and numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals, with headings inserted immediately above the body of the table and without punctuation. Tables should be generated with the "Table" tool of MS Word or MS Excel (manuscripts containing tables pasted as figures will be returned to authors). Any observation in the body of the table to identify an acronym or variable shall be referenced with superscript writing (number or symbol) placed after the acronym or variable, and properly identified and defined below the table.

Figures: graphs, photographs, diagrams, illustrations, among others, should be numbered sequentially using Arabic numerals in the same order as they were mentioned in the text. The titles should be inserted immediately below the figures and without punctuation. The authors must meet the following requirements:

• Graphs should be generated in MS Excel, maintaining access to the spreadsheets to allow publishing actions;
• Images must be presented as a "Portable Network Graphics [PNG]" file, or "Joint Photographic Experts Group [JPEG]", or "Tagged Image File Format [TIFF]" with a minimum resolution of 300 DPI;
• Figures with more than one panel should have the panels identified with capital letters (without parentheses nor dots after the letters), in the upper left corner of each panel, in a color that allows unequivocal contrast with the background of the figure (especially photographs).

Tables and figures should be self-explanatory and dismiss queries to text for interpretation and should be located immediately after the paragraph in which they are first mentioned.

Conclusion/Final Considerations: should be concise, consistent with the objectives of the work and without repetition of the results. The text should not contain abbreviations, symbols, and quotes. It should preferably be inserted as the last paragraph of the Results and Discussion, and in specific cases, as a section of the article.

Contribution of the authors: each author should be signaled with at least one component of the work. If the article is approved for publication, the identified authors (such as Neves, D.C.) should indicate the contribution of each one, not exceeding 5 lines, including: Conceptualization; Data acquisition; Data analysis;
Design of metodology; Software development; and, Writing and editing. 
.

Acknowledgment: must be the place where the author thanks those who really contributed in a relevant way to the elaboration of the work, but who are not the authors. It is recommended that the text does not exceed 3 lines.

MANUSCRIPT STYLE ELEMENTS

In the writing of the manuscript, authors should make sure to:

• Define the abbreviations/acronyms the first time they are mentioned in the abstract and in the text, and again in the tables and figures. Advance in its full writing followed by the acronym presented in parentheses, e.g: Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA);
• Discriminate the Latin name or binomial or trinomial (scientific) nomenclature and authorship of all plants, insects, pathogens and non-cosmopolitan animals in italics, when mentioned for the first time in the text, e.g: Jatropha curcass (L. 1753)
• Refrain from identifying commercial names of any products, identifying compounds and products only by the active principles (or names of the molecules gathered in it);
• Use the International System of Units;
• Identify soils using the USDA soil taxonomy (http://soils.usda.gov/technical/classification/osd/index.html) to the second level (suborder) or up to the fourth level (subgroup). The FAO classification can also be used up to the second level. Free translation of the name and classification of the soil is not allowed;
• Write the numbers one to ten in full, except when followed by units. For decimal quantities smaller than one, a zero must be entered before decimal separation;
• Make sure that when the text is written in the Portuguese language, the decimal separation should be made with the use of a comma (,) and thousands, with the use of the period(.). When written in English, use period (.) as the decimal separator;
• Make sure that the notation and interrelationship of units should be expressed using the negative power, with single spacing, e.g: gram per liter - g ^L-1; kg per hectare - kg ha-1;
• Use the 24-hour time system, with four digits for notation of time, i.e. hours and minutes: 09h00min, 18h30min;
• Discriminate dates in the form month-day-year, as follows: Mar. 18. 2000, Feb. 01. 1987, shortening the months with more than four letters as follows: Jan.; Feb., Mar. etc.

References: The article submitted should have at least 70% of quotations from periodicals being at least 40% of the last ten years. The journal accepts a maximum of 5% of self-quotations.

Bibliographic citations of the type apud or quoted are not accepted and only the original citation should be kept. Citations of articles in the press, personal communication, folder, handout, undergraduate education research, monograph, dissertation, thesis, technical report, papers, and congress abstracts are not accepted.

The article should have at least 15 and a maximum of 30 bibliographic references. For the contribution to the modality of the review article, there is no maximum limit of bibliographical references.

References and citations to Quaestum Journal articles will be formatted using the minimal format style "author-year". Check if all citations in the text are included in the list of bibliographic references. Additional recommendations are:

- Using capital letter only for the initial letter in the surnames of the author and collective entities (as authorship);

- Indicating the names of authors:

(i) Maintain the degree of kinship, according to the language of the document for the designations Filho, Júnior, Neto, Nephew, following the surnames of the authors (Scorvo Filho, J.D.; La Scala Jr, N.; Marcos Filho, J.);

(ii) Indicate by the first part of the surname those linked by a hyphen (Blanco-Canqui, H., Volland-Tuduri, N.);

(iii) Indicate by penultimate surname, authors of Spanish origin (Vidal Torrado, P., Contreras Espinal, F.);

(iv) Indicate by the penultimate surname the compounds of noun + adjective: (Castelo Branco, C.);

(v) Maintain the "Mac" and "Mc" particles of the Anglo-Saxon surnames (MacTrevor, R.; McGinty, A.S.; McQueen, D.J.);

(vi) Maintain the particles "von" and "van" of the German and Dutch last names respectively (Raij, B. van; Fisch, K. von; Lippe, J. von der; Graaf, P.K. van der;)

Format and structuring

- The list of references should comply with the following parameters: alphabetical order of the author, consider the number (quantity) in increasing order, following the alphabetical sequence:

(i) Santos, S.; (ii) Santos, S.; Saad, M.; (iii) Santos, S.; Moretti, A.; Toledo, M.A.; (iv) Santos, S.; Saad, M.; Toledo, M.A. Examples: only one author: Santos (2012) or (Santos, 2012); two authors: Tamarit and Gómez (2011) or (Tamarit and Gómez, 2011); three or more authors: Randow et al. (2010) or (Tamarit et al., 2010).

- Organize the references in alphabetical order and in parentheses, using a semicolon (;) to separate the multiple citations, for example: (Souza et al, 2009; Santos, 2010; Santos, 2013) and (Liebert, 2009; Liebert e Benkendorff, 2007; Zarate et al., 1999);

- If the reference presents the same authors with years of different publications, separate the dates by "and" for example: (Gulisashvili and Stein, 2006 and 2009).

- Identify multiple quotes 'same author, same date' with the help of lowercase letters, for example: (Brazil, 2007a, b).

The authors should still follow the following standards:

- Use the "author-year" style to order the list of references, and:

(i) abbreviate only the first and second names;

(ii) use capital letters for all acronyms;

(iii) use capital letters for the first letter of the surname and other initials of the authors, which should be separated by a period (.);

(iv) separate authors by a semicolon (;);

(v) separate authors of the year by punctuation (.);

(vi) do not use an ampersand (&) in the citations, nor in the reference list;

(vii) do not use underlined or bold characters to highlight any part of the reference;

(vii) use capital letters in the first letter of the book titles and periodicals;

(ix) do not use comma (,) to separate the title and the edition of the periodical;

(x) separate the edition numbers of the periodical from the pages by colon punctuation (:);

(xi) use full page numbers, separated by a hyphen ("n-dash");

(xii) separate groups of pages with a comma if the article was published on discontinuous pages;

(xii) indicate the number of the edition as "2ed", for example;

(xiv) about books and manuals indicate the publishers or the publisher before discriminating the publishers’ or editor's headquarters;

(xv) separate the editors or publisher's location by a comma (,); and

(xvi) in these cases, declare the names of the city, state, and country.
